Say What Now Twofer of the Day: Indiana state Rep. Eric Turner (R-Cicero) argues against an a proposed amendment to his anti-abortion bill that would offer an exemption to victims of rape and incest on the grounds that women could take advantage of this “loophole” by lying about being victims of rape or incest.

The amendment was ultimately voted down 42 to 54.

Below: Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI) told a constituent at a recent town hall that he feels for his money woes because he too is struggling to make ends meet on his $174,000/year salary.

Naturally, this makes him seem kinda out of touch, so his local GOP chapter is working overtime to get the video removed from YouTube and elsewhere.

Last night

shoestringsocial:

For some reason, everyone staying on the floor I’m on was slamming doors and hollering. The girl next door was screaming at some dude and throwing things against the wall.

I understand people argue but be considerate about the time of day you decide to get upset.

Other than that, last night was pretty great.

Okay, seriously. This argument is going on too long. I can’t believe people are in opposition to them. They’re in PUBLIC, SECULAR schools, and having taught in such a school first hand, I can assure you that a) they’re better than the currently-available alternative to scripture classes, ie. ‘free, supervised play’ and also b) they’re probably much more substantial than the ridiculous Catholic scripture classes I witnessed over several months in 2009… the ‘teachers’ (I use that term loosely) were totally patronising and had no training in communicating with students at all, and the subject matter was useless, they were rote-learning pointless events from the Old Testament through crappy songs… there was no point to the lessons at all. I could have taught them better, having been raised a Catholic. The entire point of this system is to provide these children with an opportunity to begin to understand ethical discourse in the world. You begin with the minutiae examples of playground politics and then gradually apply this to their world view. It is so good to get these kids thinking in this manner, and for some kids to not have access to this kind of higher level thinking will inhibit their social development and make the world a terrible place to be in. Sure, go ahead and keep hacking away at your scripture classes. I, as an atheist, would never ever send my kids through any sort of religious indoctrination when they are at such a young, impressionable age, but you have the right to do this. Just don’t expect other kids to have to miss out on VALID ethical discourse because of your pathetic, paranoid concerns that prayer will be taken out of schools. (Oh, and for the record, it should be. Just saying… separation of religion and state is the basis of our entire society… although fuck, sometimes I wonder…)
It might be that it’s 4am, or maybe it’s because I’ve been feeling a little low lately, but god the world is going to shit. People debate over the world ending due to lack of resources (ie. water), but the way I see it, it’s going to come grinding to an unbearable halt much sooner when religious fundamentalism takes over the world. It’s already alive and well in America (who seem to think their country was founded on Christianity - people clearly don’t read their history books anymore… or, more likely, history is being told from a very particular perspective) and it’s only a matter of time before it happens here. I mean, our atheist, unmarried, childless, female Prime Minister is against gay marriage… seriously, what the shit is that all about? If this world gets any worse, I might just have to cut my losses and commit to a permanent artistic retreat somewhere remote. The world is becoming an exceedingly stupid place to be in.
Wow. That got serious. All I wanted to do was post a cartoon from the newspaper I found amusing. Can I get a ‘Morbid!’? Anyhow, you can find the article the cartoon is from right here.
The above comic is by Cathy Wilcox, and has been taken from The Sydney Morning Herald’s website. The above opinions are entirely my own.
